The Problem
For this concept problem, Cultured Cooking, is experiencing an influx of customers due to the social media presence of an influencer. The restaurant has tripled its sales in the last few months, and therefore needs to train and hire more staff to meet the demand.
The Solution
An eLearing module that will introduce the staff members to the culture and food of Nigeria. There will be 3 different modules for learners to begin to get acclimated with how the restaurant is run and the popular menu items. This will be the best solution because learners will be able to review any missed material and give immediate feedback for each question to learners during the quiz.
My Process
With the end goal in mind, I used the ADDIE model to create an interactive experience that would resonate with the learner by incorporating the most important information within the modules.
Action Map
I started by action mapping the problem to identify the high-priority actions someone would need to perform to help the organization reach its business goal. Prioritizing the necessities the learner needs helps to create more successful habit-building and changed behavioral outcomes. Identifying these specific actions was especially critical for a goal that addresses reducing onboarding time.
Text- Based Storyboard
Once I finalized the high-priority actions, I designed relatable training modules for the learner to complete. I wrote the script for these modules in a narrative voice that would be simple enough for learners of all ages. I included the player, so the learner can easily navigate through the modules when needed.
When the learner reaches a decision-making checkpoint in the training modules there is a risk-free environment as a new hire. Allowing the user to make mistakes and connect actions with real-world outcomes optimizes learning and personalization of the learning experience.
Visual Mockups
After the storyboard was approved, I began the visual design process by creating a set of wireframes for each type of screen the user would interact with, a mood board, and an initial style guide. These preliminary design tools provided valuable guidance throughout the mockup process, ensuring consistency and high-quality aesthetics throughout the project.
While creating the visual mockups, I leveraged Adobe Illustrator and various vector background images to provide variation and interest without jeopardizing consistency. In many instances, I adjusted backgrounds to create the desired layout and ensure a cohesive color palette that would be consistent for a college campus.
Interactive Prototype
Building on the text-based storyboard and visual mock-ups, I created training modules in Articulate Storyline 360. These modules served as a platform for gathering feedback. I included interactive slides, seamless yet non-distracting transitions, visual elements such as images, and other engaging features. Throughout the development process, I collaborated with fellow instructional designers and enhanced the learning experience by incorporating insights from user testing.
Full Development
After integrating the feedback on the interactive slides, I was prepared to finalize the eLearning module. The development process was smooth and efficient, thanks to the foundation laid by the previous building blocks.
Results and Takeaways
Managing this process end-to-end has been a great opportunity to develop training. The process of creating the Cultured Cooking Training has provided me with a few takeaways. If I were to do this training again, I would continue to develop separate training for specific jobs in the restaurant (e.g. chef, servers, back of the house, etc).
This project allowed me to work with a concept client, SMEs, and learners to create an eLearning training. It provided a chance for me to grow as an instructional designer and eLearning developer.
