Embracing Diversity: Building an Inclusive Workplace Culture
Overview
This tool is designed to be a brief overview to help employees navigate diverse office environments respectfully.
Audience: Staff members that work in an office setting with cultural diversity
Responsibilities: Instructional Design, Graphic Design
Tools Used: Rise 360, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe XD
Problem and Solution
I often get asked what are ways to incorporate inclusivity in the work place. These questions vary from different perspectives. Often times, the minority group feels a lack of cultural awareness and insufficient inclusive practices in team collaboration. On the other hand, the majority is often not aware of the practices they are using to contribute to this.
As a black woman often in cooperate spaces, I have learned appreciate both perspectives and become intentional to embrace multicultural environments. I decided a brief overview that can be referenced as a job aid on a mobile device, would be the most efficient way for users to keep these tips in mind.
Process
Storyboarding
As someone who is accustomed to working in multicultural environments, I needed feedback from less familiar with diversity within the workplace to make sure that the information was easily understandable and practical for learners. I received this feedback throughout the writing process from different people who fit this profile. This allowed me to tailor the information into understandable and actionable items for learners.
Visual Mockups
I created the visual mockups using Adobe XD. Using this program allowed me to quickly design multiple versions of the job aid. I continued to iterate and adjust the design language, receiving feedback from my peers throughout the process. After multiple versions and adjustments, I settled on using shades of green with colored illustrations. The light shades of green serve a couple of purposes.
First, this color hints that the action of the learner is acceptable. Second, based on conversations with workers that are not accustomed to diversity, the process of learning different approaches can be stressful. The light green shade conveys calmness and optimism as listers engage in a potentially stressful activity.
The final design is in a visually appealing and minimal style that focuses the user’s attention on helpful information, without giving them more information than they can handle.
Development
This project was created in RISE 360 and Adobe Illustrator which required me to expand my skills in the programs. I started by creating beginner friendly guidelines and used them to create a quick interactive reference . I changed the blocks of each section to give the information in different formats to combat boredom. After each section was created, I challenged the learner with a self reflection question.
Takeaways
As a subject matter expert on this topic, this project challenged me to create a helpful and direct job aid to workers who are transitioning to a more diverse office space. I worked with a variety of people with different knowledge levels of inclusion and diversity to provide a genuinely useful supplement that provides actionable steps for to better equip workers . This project highlighted the importance of real user testing in the instructional design process.
